5 Tips on How to Keep a Tan for Longer

At The Sunshine Co., we’ve spent years helping our clients get the most from every visit, and the difference between a tan that lasts a week and one that lasts three often comes down to a handful of simple habits.

Here’s what actually works.

Why Can a Tan Fade Quickly?

Your skin is constantly renewing itself. The skin’s outer layer sheds and replaces itself roughly every 28 days. Your tan lives in those upper skin cells, so as they shed, the colour goes with them.

According to Healthline, this natural cell turnover process can be significantly accelerated by dehydration, harsh products, and environmental factors, meaning a tan on dryer skin will fade considerably faster than one on skin that’s consistently moisturised.

1. Moisturise Daily

If there’s one habit that makes the biggest difference, it’s this one.

Hydrated skin holds onto tanned cells for longer. When skin becomes dry, it flakes and sheds at a faster rate, taking your tan with it. Applying a good quality body lotion, oil or a tanning-specific moisturiser every day, ideally within a few minutes after showering while your skin is still slightly warm, helps maintain the skin’s moisture barrier and slows that fading process down.

As a guide, aim for roughly a 50p coin-sized amount for each area (arm, leg, etc.). Don’t forget areas that are often missed but tend to fade first, like the backs of the hands, the tops of the feet, and around the knees and elbows. These drier areas shed faster, so giving them a little extra attention goes a long way.

2. Avoid Over-Exfoliation

Exfoliating before a tanning session is genuinely useful, as it removes the build-up of dead skin cells and creates a more even surface, which means a more even result. But once you’ve got your colour, put the exfoliating mitt down.

Harsh or frequent scrubbing after tanning strips away the upper layers of skin at an accelerated rate. Post-tan, limit exfoliation to once a week at most, and opt for the gentlest formulation you can find.

Your choice of shower gel matters too. Opt for a moisturising, creamy formula rather than anything containing small exfoliant beads, which can gradually buff away your colour with every wash.

3. Space Your Sessions Correctly

This is one of the most common misconceptions we come across: the idea that tanning more frequently will make your colour darker or longer-lasting. It won’t necessarily and it can actually work against you.

Tanning too often stresses the skin. Giving your skin adequate time between sessions allows the melanin response to fully develop and settle, which results in a deeper, more even colour that genuinely lasts longer.

The quality of the equipment you’re using plays a role here too. Sunbeds with premium UV bulbs deliver a more effective and even UV output than older machines, which means the melanin response is stronger, but also that the colour takes time to fully surface. The tan is still developing beneath the skin’s surface over the following 24 to 48 hours.

Tanners who space their sessions correctly and look after their skin in between, consistently get better results than those who visit more frequently but skip the aftercare.

Think of it as quality over quantity. Your skin needs time for the tan to develop. If you’re unsure how many sessions you actually need to build and maintain your colour, our guide to how many sunbed sessions it takes to get a tan breaks it down in detail.

4. Switch to Cooler Showers

Hot showers feel great, but they’re one of the fastest ways to fade your colour. Hot water breaks down the skin’s natural lipid barrier, accelerates cell turnover, and strips away the oils that keep skin hydrated. The result is drier skin that sheds faster and a tan that disappears well before it should.

Switching to lukewarm or cool showers, particularly in the days immediately after tanning, makes a genuine difference. Also, ensure you’re not showering too soon after a session.

Find out how long to wait for a shower after a sunbed here. When you get out, pat your skin dry gently with a towel rather than rubbing, as this creates friction that physically removes surface skin cells.

5. Use a Tan-Extending Lotion Between Sessions

Tan-extending and tanning-specific aftercare lotions are designed to do two things: nourish the skin deeply, and support melanin retention between sessions. They’re not the same as standard body lotion, and they’re worth the investment if you want to make your colour last.

For the best results, look for tanning accelerators, as these products are designed to use alongside UV tanning and are formulated to nourish the skin and support melanin retention. We stock a range of tanning accelerators online and in-salon, so our team can recommend the right one for your skin type.

Frequently Asked Questions

This varies from person to person depending on skin type, lifestyle, and aftercare habits. Generally, colour from a tanning session can last anywhere from one to three weeks. Consistent moisturising, gentle skincare, and the right products can significantly extend this. If you’re finding your colour isn’t developing the way you’d expect in the first place, our guide to why you might not be tanning is worth a read before focusing on how to maintain it.

Yes, this is one of the most well-supported tips in skincare. Hydrated skin sheds at a slower rate, which means tanned cells stay in the upper layers of the skin for longer.

Daily moisturising is consistently cited by dermatologists as one of the most effective ways to slow the natural fading process.

The most common culprits are dry skin, hot showers, harsh body washes, and over-exfoliation. All of these accelerate the skin’s natural cell turnover process, which takes your tan with it. Starting a daily moisturising routine and switching to cooler showers can make a noticeable difference almost immediately.

Before, not after. A gentle exfoliation 24 hours before your session creates a smoother, more even surface for a better result. Once you have your colour, avoid harsh exfoliation and keep skincare gentle to preserve it for as long as possible. This is the best way to build a base tan.
